HORSE RIDING and the authentic GAUCHO FEELING. Esteros del Ibera - Corrientes Province - Argentina
Horse Riding and the authentic Gaucho Feeling
Have you ever had this little-boy or little-girl dream of becoming a Cowboy or Cowgirl or at least of experiencing the Cowboy feeling once in your life? We ensure you that you are not the only one. We have hosted many guests who visited us to fulfil their cowboy dreams – their gaucho dreams in the Argentine way. We know what you are looking for and we know the perfect places to organize your stay and make your dreams reality.
Your former style of horse riding doesn’t matter nor how many years of experience you bring along, we will find the suitable estancia (ranch) and horses for you.
Getting the gaucho feeling means to get up early with your working colleagues and prepare the horses. You will look after one of the herds in the fields, check-up on their health, lasso an injured calf to treat the wound and look for the newly born or pregnant mother cows. There’s also a lot of work to do at the estancia’s corrals such as leading the cows through the tick bath, separating the calves from the mothers, vaccinating, branding, sheep shearing, taming broncos (young horses), etc.
You will get a lot of background information on the horse and cow breeds, animal health, managing large numbers (up to several thousands), the famous Argentine meat business, etc. Most of the work will be done on horseback with the powerful criollos or mestizos (criollo cross breeds).
The rest of the day (usually in the afternoons) you can enjoy a leisure horse ride along the countryside just to enjoy the wide landscapes. Here in Argentina, not even the horizon will limit your extended gallops. Maybe you prefer to relax at the estancia’s pool with a good book or stroll through the park? Or what about a adventurous swim with your horse to cool off from the morning activities?
We are also specialized on making your unconventional wishes come true:
• Polo and Pato (Argentina’s favourite horse games)
• Horse riding and golf
• Horse riding in the Andes and pre Andes (horse trekking)
• Horse riding in the jungle (with bush knives)
• Wildlife watching from the horseback (horse safari)
Feel free to communicate us your special dreams – we as passionate horse riders and hobby gauchos will understand you very well.

Trip Report Iberá Wetlands - Esteros del Ibera
Memorable Experiences at Irupé Lodge in Argentina and the Iberá Swamp
The Irupe Lodge, owned by Regi and Mauricio Lacona, is located in the small village of Colonia Carlos Pellegrini in the pristine Iberá Natural Reserve. The Iberá wetlands are the second largest marsh area after Brazil’s Pantanal. Iberá means brilliant waters in Guarani, the language and name of the first nomadic settlers of the area. The low-lying, thatched-rooved Irupe Lodge on the edge of Iberá Lake blends seamlessly into the surrounding wetlands. Each common area in the Lodge offers spectacular views of the lake.
One of the reasons Irupe Lodge is so special is its remoteness. I arrived from Buenos Aires at the Mercedes bus station at 6am in the morning. Regi met me at the station in her pickup truck and we set off on an unpaved road for Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, approximately a two-hour drive away. The sun rose over the vast open marshlands as we drove and periodically stopped along the way, so I could take pictures of the impressive landscape and wildlife. We saw deer, a variety of birds and the largest rodent species, a carpincho (Spanish for “water pig,”).
After settling into my charming room, the guide, Marco, and I set out for an enjoyable boat ride around Lake Iberá. Marco’s knowledge of the flora and fauna is extensive and he has an incredible talent for spotting hidden animals. I had the wonderful opportunity to see a sleeping black anaconda camouflaged in the brush along the shoreline. We also saw a number of caimans, capybaras, marsh deer, monkeys and a large variety of beautiful birds.
The sunset on the lake Ibera was truly the most spectacular I have seen. Marco and I were sitting in the boat when the last sunrays skimmed the surface of the water. As the sun sunk below the horizon, the sky turned a deep powder blue tinged with a warm rose-colored pink. It is clear why the Guarani named the area Iberá, after its brilliant waters.
The food at the Lodge was delicious and it was particularly nice to try some typical Argentinian dishes. I had the opportunity to sample the local bori bori soup (polenta balls, meat, vegetables and lemon), chipá (small breakfast biscuits made with cassava, mandioca in Spanish) and stuffed chicken with mandioca.
My second day in Esteros del Iberá, I enjoyed a fantastic horseback ride with Regi and Chacho, a local carpenter and guide. After a cup of maté with Chacho and his family, we rode into Ibera's countryside, where I had the unique opportunity to meet some of the locals and catch a glimpse of how they live. One of the local women gave us a lesson on how to spin sheep’s wool. At another ranch, we enjoyed delicious chorizo casero (homemade sausage). The beautiful countryside, the tasty food and the wealth of information Regi and Chacho shared made for a very memorable trip.
The last morning we left for Posadas, a town three hours north of Colonia Carlos Pellegrini. On the way, we stopped at Las Marias, the famous maté and tea plantation. We had a delicious parrillada (grilled meats) lunch on the premises and then took a tour of the Las Marias plantation. We saw how they grow, process and package the renowned Argentinian maté. It was interesting to learn about the history of the company and how the owners pride themselves in creating a pleasant and supportive work environment for their employees.
Regi and Mauricio have worked hard to build relationships with the people in their surrounding community. They work with the locals to create tours, reflecting the culture and expertise of the people in the Iberá region. They also hire and train local people to work at the Lodge. Often, this is more challenging than bringing in prepared employees from the outside, but, in the end, their effort benefits them and the community in which they live. A key characteristic of true ecotourism is providing financial benefits for the local community, while recognizing the importance of preserving the local cultural heritage.
